В Sphinx отсутствует необходимая зависимость, а скрипт настройки неправильно интерпретирует причину сбоя. Установка правильной версии glibc устранила проблему.

У меня та же проблема, и это работает для меня в Ubuntu 14.04 trusty

Сначала нужно установить sphinxsearch

sudo apt-get install sphinxsearch sphinxbase-utils libsphinxbase-dev

Затем перейдите в папку api libsphinxclient и установите

cd /usr/share/sphinxsearch/api/libsphinxclient
sudo ./configure
sudo make
sudo make install

Затем вы можете установить клиент sphinx, используя pecl

sudo pecl install sphinx

Помните, что после установки вам нужно добавить extension = sphinx.so в файл php.ini и перезапустить сервер apache
