Если у вас есть GNU grep, то используйте это (?<=) должен работать «оглядывающийся сзади»:

$ echo -e "this is a string\nthis is another string"
this is a string
this is another string

$ echo -e "this is a string\nthis is another string" | grep -Po '(?<=this is).+'
 a string
 another string
