Я пытаюсь научиться работать с tomcat, но борюсь с установкой и запуском демона.

Я скачал с сайта tomcat и поместил бинарные файлы в /usr/local/apache-tomcat-7.0.37/

$CATALINA_HOME указывает на это.

Я настроил jsvc с параметром -with-java=/usr/lib/jvm/java-1.6.0-openjdk-1.6.0.0.x86_64

и скопировал jsvc в каталог bin/.

После инициализации демона, как описано в документации, я попытался запустить демон:

sudo $CATALINA_HOME/bin/daemons.sh start

Catalina.out говорит:

$CATALINA_HOME/bin/daemon.sh --java-home /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.6.../

Также вам может понадобиться скопировать jsvc jar в $CATALINA_HOME/bin/commons-daemon.jar

Если вам не нужно запускать tomcat как демон, проще $CATALINA_HOME/bin/catalina.sh run .
